Design and Test of a Radioisotope Dual Ablation Gauge.

Abstract

The objective of this program was the development, fabrication, and testing of a radioisotope dual ablation gauge which could gauge ablation and erosion in the following four nozzle materials: Carbon cloth phenolic; asbestos phenolic; paper phenolic; and low density carbon felt phenolic. Ablation and erosion measurements were obtained from the external detection of radiation emanating from radioactive needles embedded in the nozzle liner materials. Each needle contained two isotopes emitting gamma radiations of different energy levels. The isotope compounds were chosen so that one erodes and the other ablates in the same manner as the surrounding ablative material. Thus, the depletion rates of the two isotopes, as detected externally to the nozzle shell, corresponded to the surface recession and char-virgin interface recession rates, respectively. (Author)
