100-Watt Thermoelectric Power Source.
Abstract
The report describes the design, construction, operation, and delivery of a 100-watt thermoelectric power source. The primary mission was considered to be a 1000-hour unattended operation. Other requirements were: 26 volts output (plus or minus 2 volts), a maximum weight of 20 lbs. (less fuel and tank), the size was not to exceed 1 cu ft., and operate at temperatures of minus 40F to plus 125F, in 60 mph winds and after each of the following tests: vibration, bounce, shock, and bench handling. The generator utilizes a fully aspirated flame impingement type burner, a lead telluride thermoelectric converter, and a unique cooling system which uses the butane fuel as the cold side heat exchanger fluid. The system is essentially silent, has no moving parts, weighs 34.8 lbs. including tank and sufficient fuel for 15 hours of operation, and demonstrated and efficiency of 5.37%. (Author)
