Array Modulation Techniques.

Abstract

The report contains the results obtained from a study program to determine the maximum modulation capabilities of microwave scatterers using integrated spiral-antenna tunnel-diode reflection amplifiers. A linear time-varying network model of the modulated scatterers is used to calculate the modulation characteristics. Techniques involving subcarrier modulation have been utilized to increase the modulation capability of the scatterers. Antenna array patterns for a general class of modulated active arrays have been calculated. Amplitude tapering and beam steering using sub-carrier phase-shifting have been considered. Theoretically calculated results are verified by extensive measurements. In addition to the tunnel-diode scatterers, modulation of avalanche diode reflection amplifiers has also been studied and results presented. (Author)
