Qualitative Flight Evaluation of the Flight Engagement Tactical Cargo Hook (FETCH) on a CH-47A Helicopter.
Abstract
The FETCH system was flown to evaluate concept feasibility in relation to the goals set forth in the Test Objectives. The FETCH system has successfully met three of the five stated goals. The system failed to provide a substantially faster or more efficient method of engaging a ground load using the pilot-only pickup method. The pilot-only FETCH system required 42 percent more time (1.1 versus 0.77 minutes) than the standard CH-47 cargo hook method. However, with ground crew assistance the FETCH system was 23 percent faster (0.6 versus 0.77 minutes) than the standard CH-47 cargo hook method. All pickups were made with FETCH in the stowed position. Mechanical difficulty in the form of hoist cable failure after load engagements precluded a full evaluation of the hoist cable/winch assembly and this failure was the main deficiency. Introduction of air into the utility hydraulic system when using the pneumatic hook release, bending of the cargo hook keeper, and the lack of electrical and hydraulic breakaway disconnects for emergency system jettison were the other deficiencies of the system.
