Mass-Spectrometric Studies of Graphite Vaporization at High Temperatures.

Abstract

The design and status of equipment being assembled for a study of the high-temperature vaporization of graphite is presented. Involved is a versatile high-pressure sampling system coupled with a magnetic mass spectrometer. The first phase of studies having to do with the effect of cold sampling probes on hot gases will be carried out in the present Bendix mass spectrometer beam system. A time-of-flight scheme for measuring velocity distributions in supersonic beams is described together with a computer program to develop predicted behavior. A brief reference to discrepancies in presently published data on carbon is made and future plans discussed. (Author)
