Study and Evaluation of Segmented Sphere Pressure Vessels.

Abstract

The design feasibility of the Segmented Sphere Pressure Vessel concept has been evaluated by fabrication and testing of prototype articles representing three design variations, (a) A longitudinally symmetric array of uniform size 12 inch diameter spherical segments, (b) A toroidal array of 12 inch segments, (c) A mixed diameter array where 12 inch spherical segments are joined to a central 17 inch diameter sphere. Each thin-walled prototype version pressure vessel was fabricated from fusion welded annealed 6Al-4V titanium. Components and assemblies were fabricated using normal manufacturing processes for the materials, with associated control, inspection, and rework practices, except where alternate techniques were found necessary. These experiences and processing recommendations are described in this report. (Author)
