Ignition Characteristics of the .50-Caliber API-M8 Versus 2024-T3 Aluminum Plates.

Abstract

A series of experiments were conducted to observe the functioning (ignition) of incendiary projectiles (.50-caliber API-M8). During these tests the following impact parameters were considered: impact velocity, impact angle, and plate thickness. The results reported are for 2024-T3 aluminum targets. The objective was to establish the minimum target thickness that is required to cause immediate functioning. The resulting curves depict this in several ways and indicate that the processes which cause ignition are different as the plate thickness changes. Several types of ignitions were encountered during the tests and each type is discussed briefly. (Author)
