Testing and Evaluation of Impact-Abrasion-Erosion Resistant Aircraft Coatings.

Abstract

An impact-abrasion erosion system was developed for evaluating candidate erosion and corrosion resistant materials as prospective coatings for aircraft metal leading edges, inlet ducts, and jet engine compressor components. The coatings were compared at various temperatures. Best leading edge coatings were: 1) a plasma sprayed intermetallic with an organic cover coat, and 2) electroplated nickel. Best compressor component coating in both erosion and corrosion resistance was a fired on slurry type cermet applied during austenitizing. Materials evaluated were ceramic, cermet, polymeric, elastomeric, metallic, intermetallic and composite (Fibeglass-plastic laminate). (Author, modified-PL).
