Criteria for Establishing a Relative Design Merit Index for Aircraft Landing Gear Ground Flotation.

Abstract

This report includes the results of an extensive review of the related literature and discussions with specialists in the flotation field. Aircraft flotation parameters are developed, defined, and related to RMI needs. Soil mechanics considerations, particularly the selection of test bed materials for the development of a RMI are presented in depth. The characteristics and use of an artificial clay soil, developed during the study, for RMI testing is covered in detail. Various test methods and techniques applicable to the establishment of a RMI are developed and evaluated. This study proposes the use of landing gear total sinkage into a soil surface and resulting surface roughness, in terms of the number of aircraft passes over a soil surface, as the basic criteria for development of a RMI.
