Considerations for Analytical Modeling of Target Radar Cross Section as a Function of Aspect Angle,

Abstract

Experimental data were available for three different ballistic projectiles, showing the relationship between aspect angle and radar cross section. The geometry parameters are the pitch and roll angles. An effort was undertaken to find an analytical expression describing this relationship. The objective of the work is to find a mathematical model fitting the experimental data. Radar cross section is a function of many factors including orientation of target with respect to the radar, polarization of radar, radar wavelength, the conductivity of the target's surface, and environmental factors. Two approaches were investigated, and a tentative but unproven suggestion derived for simultaneous variation of pitch, roll, and aspect angles. (Author)
