Development of Manufacturing Methods, Process Controls, and Computer Program for Fabricating Weldable Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards.

Abstract

The development of an automated production machine for fabricating multilayer circuit boards is described. The goal is for this equipment to produce boards of improved reliability using a very short production cycle. Details of the equipment developed and specific design approaches are described. This report covers the design and testing of a copper-weld ribbon-insert/weld test, a lance tool, a bottom-of-the-hole weld tool, and a nine-spindle drill tool. It also describes the circuit modification of the Digital Systems Numerical Control drill machine. Technologies involving copper welding, nondestructive testing, materials, lamination, and registration of the layers of multilayer boards are discussed. The term 'Automatrix' is used in the text to describe the system. (Author)
