Digital Data Link Study.

Abstract

The primary objective is to provide background information for the establishment of intra-aircraft communication technique standards. The report outlines an approach to system analysis, presents the requirements for a hypothetical data system, describes data link design considerations for each of the technical areas, and discusses various aspects of synchronization, addressing, quantization, and data content. Deleterious factors affecting external data link performance (including multipath propagation, noise, countermeasures, and path losses) are described, together with methods of combating these effects by appropriate selection of coding and diversity of frequency and modulation. In addition, the influence of the assembly and dissemination of data on the design of airborne and surface systems is discussed. (Author)
