Coherent Aperture Study.

Abstract

The problem of determining the median response of an array immersed in a hypothetical distorted wave field has been considered using the Monte Carlo technique as well as by means of a more formal analysis. Wave-front fluctuations specifically considered include those producing individual element outputs in which both the amplitude and phase variations can be described by Gaussian statistics, and also the physically more likely case in which individual phase-quadrature components can be described by non-zero mean Gaussian statistics (Rice distribution). The effect of correlation between the fluctuations experienced at the various elements also has been investigated. The most significant engineering aspects of the experimental procedure itself have been considered. A three-step program is suggested that should result in an economy of both field effort and hardware. (Author)
