Power Frequency Surveillance Study,

Abstract

The report is a facsimile of a report documenting the results of a feasibility study on the detectability of power frequency magnetic fields. Appendix A is a facsimile of a memorandum entitled, 'Induction Fields at Power Frequencies'; Appendices B and C are copies of documents on induction field experiments conducted by NWC. The investigation disclosed that, in at least one case (that of large cross-country power transmission lines), detection and homing appear to be perfectly feasible from ranges measured in kilometers. For other possible power sources, however, homing is probably out of the question, and detection at any but very short ranges is marginal. The various documents have been compiled for publication in the NWC technical publication series for the benefit of others in this sphere of work and for inclusion in the literature. (Author)
