Observation of Botulism in the Poznan Region,

Abstract

During the 15 year period from 1949 to 1963, 1169 cases of botulism were recorded in Poznan wojewodztwo: average yearly morbidity 4.3 per 10,000; it ranged for the individual areas (powiaty) from 1.3 to 20.0. Cases were more common in rural than urban areas, in adults more than in children; these differences were statistically significant. Of 641 cases recorded during 1955 to 1963, 293 were sporadic, the rest in outbreaks involving two or more persons each time; of 559 cases of the disease from 1948 to 1953, 29 (5.1%) were fatal.
