Ultraviolet Ion Laser.

Abstract

Operating characteristics of a cw ultraviolet ion laser are described. A maximum of 1.35 W cw ultraviolet output was obtained on the Ar III 363.8 and 351.1 nm transitions. Results are given for a spectroscopic survey of neon, argon, krypton, and xenon ion laser transitions obtained in a metal disk bore laser at current densities up to 1900 A/sq cm. Several wavelengths were observed in continuous operation for the first time. Predictions are made for the energy level positions of the Ar III singlet system, which contains the strongest ultraviolet ion laser line. A method of classifying atomic transitions using stimulated emission techniques is described which can be used to confirm these predictions. The design of a 1 W cw ultraviolet laser head and power supply is given. (Author)
