Initial Production Test of Melter, Asphalt, Skid-Mounted.

Abstract

The test objective was to determine if the melters were suitable for issue to troops. Testing was conducted for a combined total of 50 hours of dedrumming operations (melting asphalt) on two test items connected in parallel under field conditions on missions which typify normal operational use of the equipment by troops in the field. The melters met all operational criteria. No test item failures occurred during testing. One test item successfully completed three separate 10-hour missions of melting asphalt and was transported for 250 miles without incident. The overall maintenance ratio was 0.082 hours of active maintenance time per operating hour. There was one support deficiency in that support items (repair parts and appropriate manuals) were not furnished with the test items. It was concluded that the Code A Model TH-12-750 - Asphalt Melter as furnished for test is suitable for troop use however, issue to troops should be withheld until applicable support items (AR 700-70) are available for simultaneous issue.
