Aerodynamic Characteristics of Mars Probe/Lander Shapes,

Abstract

Results of free-flight tests performed in the ballistics ranges on three candidate shapes for a Mars probe/lander vehicle are presented. These tests were performed in air over a wide range of Mach numbers, ranging from 0.6 to 13. The drag coefficient, its effect with angle of attack, and static and dynamic stability coefficients are presented. (Author)
