Gamma Radiation Source Calibration Using Active Spaceflight Tissue-Equivalent Dosimeters.
Abstract
A rapid and highly accurate method of calibrating gamma radiation sources such as cesium-137 and cobalt-60 emitters has been devised using specially designed tissue equivalent ionization chambers operated as Bragg-Gray dosimeters. Their high accuracy, long life, excellent reproducibility of radiation response, and sealed, pressurized sensors make them ideally suited for calibration of standard radiation sources. The accuracy obtained in the calibration of two gamma radiation sources over the range 2.0 millirad/hour to 300 rad/hour was found to be equivalent to the accuracies obtained with an r-Meter.
