Usefulness of Plotting Constant-Gradient Contours on Maritime Maps as an Aid for Interpretation of Radar Images,

Abstract

The author discusses the cartographic relationship existing between the radar image and the topographic features of a coastline which reflects the signals and proposes the drafting of a special chart of constant-slope fields for better interpretation of the topographic situation as observed on a radar screen. Since the signal as depicted on a radar screen is, among other factors, a function of the altitude and the angle of slope it is considered that it would be most advantageous to represent constant-slope fields on the background of constant-altitude contour lines, and the most typical contour line of a particular terrain would be taken as the basic contour line. Suggestions are given for presenting the profile of a terrain for navigational charts for radar purposes on the basis of the morphological division of the terrain which sufficiently well presents differences in altitude. The morphological division of northern Poland is shown. The method of drafting such constant-slope charts is described, and the method of determining the typical contour line is given. (Author)
