Engineering Test of In-Bore Scavenger for Tank, Combat, Full-Tracked, M60A1E2.

Abstract

This engineering test was conducted to determine the technical performance and safety characteristics of the M60A1E2 closed-breech scavenging system. The system included hardware and support equipment. The 2245-round test was conducted at APG during the period October 1967 through 31 October 1968. The primary test design was dictated by the incomplete combustion of the XM157 cartridge case and by the probability equation that describes the hazard rate due to loading a subsequent round. Concurrent firing was conducted at the Tropic Test Center (TTC, Panama). The problems of toxic fumes and flareback were eliminated.
