Plasma Convergence in the Nighttime D-Region by Horizontal and Vertical Wind Variations.

Abstract

Dynamics of the nighttime D-region which cause perturbations in the region supporting long-range vlf propagation were examined; equations describing plasma convergence by horizontal and vertical wind variations were derived; and wind fields likely to produce such perturbations were determined. Using classic dynamo equations, plasma-drift equations were derived for horizontal winds with and without horizontal variations. These apply to the entire ionosphere. Criteria were determined for horizontal and vertical plasma convergence. For reasonable values of vertical wind shear and accepted recombination rates, plasma convergence is small. It can be large for convergence of a north-south wind, depending on the ability of the Hall current to polarize the medium in this direction. (Author)
