Initial Production Test of Loader, Scoop Type, 2-1/2-Cubic Yard.

Abstract

Test objectives were to determine if the performance and maintenance characteristics of the test loader meet user requirements, and to determine if it can be adequately maintained with tools, repair parts and manuals authorized using unit, or direct and general support maintenance units. Throughout testing the loader was used under simulated field conditions in a manner typifying normal operational use of the equipment by units in the field. The three test items were operated a total of 1,073 test hours on typical construction missions. The test items failed to satisfy criteria with respect to maintainability and reliability. Sixteen deficiencies and 10 shortcomings were noted. Ten of the deficiencies pertained to lack of reliability in hydraulic hoses, fittings, and O-rings; failure of output shaft seals; and numerous radiator leaks. Six of the deficiencies pertained to maintainability to include difficult operations; lack of necessary tools; and inadequacy or shortage of maintenance literature. The overall maintenance ratio was 0.12 man-hours of maintenance for each hour of operation. The overall reliability of the test items at 90-percent confidence level for a 20-hour mission was 46 percent (80 percent required). The overall MTBF was 32.5 hours; the overall MTTR was 0.60 man-hours. It was concluded that performance and maintenance characteristics of the test items, as received for testing, failed to meet user requirements, and that the test item could not be maintained satisfactorily at organizational level with the tools and technical manuals provided.
