Experimental Objective Analysis and Numerical Prediction of Sea Surface Temperature.
Abstract
The U. S. Naval Oceanographic Office has under development computer objective analysis and numerical prediction models for oceanic variables. This paper discusses sea surface temperature primarily. Several methods for improving objective analysis of sea surface temperature have been investigated. The analysis procedure is capable of performing fixed operations on the data. The exact order and number of operations is tested through experimentation to develop the best analysis. The subjective analyst's experience is incorporated into the analysis by digitizing a subjective (hand-drawn) chart. A method for incorporating advection into the analysis is also being developed. Numerical prediction schemes have been developed from three approaches: statistical prediction, heat budget prediction, and dynamic prediction. Dynamic prediction based on the equivalent-barotropic model appears to be the most promising approach. Preliminary results indicate that the model can predict correct wave speeds, meanders, and transport in the Gulf Stream. (Author)
