The Radiation Response of Tissue Equivalent Dosimetry Systems to 60 MEV Proton Beams.

Abstract

The radiation response of special tissue-equivalent ionization chambers flown by the Air Force on the Gemini 4 and 6 missions to measure dose and depth dose profiles in the crew quarters was determined for 60 Mev protons generated by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Isochronous Cyclotron. The radiation response of the tissue-equivalent sensors to 60 Mev protons was found to be within 10 percent of their response to standard cobalt-60 gamma radiation. Proton energy transport through the tissue-equivalent sensors including delta ray effects is considered in detail. Comparisons of the proton response of these ionization chambers are made with the results of several experimenters and agreement is excellent. (Author)
