Research to Determine the Effects of Surface Catalycity on Materials Behavior in Dissociated Gas Streams.

Abstract

A fast flow apparatus for measurement of oxygen atom recombination rates in which surfaces are at temperatures of 300-1500K and pressures are from 0.0001 -10 torr has been constructed. Oxygen atom concentrations are measured by means of NO2 titration and air afterglow. Recombination results are reported for surfaces of silica, Ti, anodized titanium, Mo, and Ta as a function of temperature at a pressure near 4 torr. The laboratory studies of oxygen atom recombination, and the analyses of heat transfer to reentry vehicles due to atom recombination are critically reviewed. (Author)
