Utilization of a Hot Air Balloon in Ordnance Development.

Abstract

The employment of a hot air balloon as a testing instrument has provided a unique environment in ordnance development. A hot air balloon, serving as an intermediate launch platform between static testing and aircraft flight tests, has allowed cost and turnaround time to be reduced. The design and development of a tethered hot air balloon facility is presented. Since the facility was designed to assist the fuel-air explosive (FAE) program, the FAE weapon was used as the ordnance example. (Author)
