Initial Production Test of Modified Crane, Wheel-Mounted, 5-Ton, DED, 4X4, Rough Terrain, H446.

Abstract

A modified 5-ton, rough-terrain crane was subjected to an initial production test at Aberdeen Proving Ground. The purpose of the test was to determine the adequacy and quality of manufacture of the crane. Testing was terminated on 30 September 1968 by USATECOM due primarily to front axle housing bending and overheating problems. Of those tests conducted, the vehicle failed to meet requirements for the road test, speed test, and service and parking brakes. In addition, a number of shortcomings in vehicle assembly and design were recorded. USATECOM submitted a recommendation to US Army Mobility Equipment Command that all tests be conducted on a third modified 5-ton crane. This crane is scheduled for retest at Aberdeen Proving Ground during early 1969.
