On the Construction of a Ruby Maser for the X-Band with Liquid Hydrogen as Coolant,
Abstract
The article describes the design of a ruby maser and the amplifying properties of ruby crystals of varying chromium ion doping. The dependence of the voltage gain-band width product on the concentration is evaluated on the basis of the spin-lattice relaxation processes. Reference is made to experimental values of the spin-lattice relaxation times for ruby crystals measured at T = 20.3K. The noise behavior is determined experimentally and compared to theoretical values. This maser was found to have considerable advantages in service on account of the inexpensive cooling agent and the relatively low pump capacity.
