Photoelastic Analyses of Reinforced Composites.

Abstract

This report describes an investigation undertaken to determine the dependence of the matrix maximum shear-stress at the fiber-matrix interface. The photoelastic technique was used in all tests. Models for the two-dimensional photoelastic investigation were fabricated using Epon 815 epoxy as the matrix. Models for the three-dimensional photoelastic tests were made by molding Epon 815 around a 2mm diameter pyrex glass rod. In order to improve the scattering properties of the Epon matrix, 1/8 percent by weight of Carbonsil glass powder was added to the resin. (Author, modified-PL).
