Application of Intelligent Automata to Reconnaissance

Abstract

The primary goal of this project is to investigate techniques in artificial intelligence applied to the control of a mobile automaton in a real environment. The main emphasis is on the design of a hierarchy of computer programs that will accept visual and other sensory information gathered by the automaton and will direct the actions of the automaton in performing missions that require the abilities to plan ahead and to learn from previous experience. A mobile automaton controlled over a radio link from an SDS-940 computer has been constructed and is operational. It uses a visual system and other sensors combined with a complex-problem-solving system to enable it to navigate among simple objects in a laboratory.
