Flow Molding of Discontinuous Fiber Reinforced Plastics,

Abstract

The report presents a literature survey which covers aspects of molding and rheology pertinent to the flow molding of plastics containing elongated fillers, e.g. fibers or whiskers. Emphasis is placed on filler orientation, flow behavior, and breakage. The molding literature does not present a scientific approach to the investigation of these phenomena, and reported observations are not quantitative and are not interpreted in the light of current rehological developments. A specific program is recommended for the study of fiber orientation and placement in the molding of simple shapes. (Author)
