Moving Target Detection System (MOTARDES), AN/APQ-137.

Abstract

The AN/APQ-137 moving target detection system (MOTARDES) has a sensor mounted on the nose of a helicopter to detect moving enemy personnel and equipment that are difficult or impossible to see because of darkness, foliage, or camouflage. It radiates RF pulses, scans a 60 deg forward sector, processes the returns to disclose anything in motion, and presents these prospective targets on a 5-inch radarscope. Being coordinated with the fire control system, the AN/APQ-137 makes possible accurate firing of the helicopter's rocket launchers and 6-barrel 7.62-mm machine guns against targets formerly overlooked.
