Diode Control Research.

Abstract

The five-cell, sealed, 12-Ampere-hour, stabistor-controlled spacecraft battery designed for cycling under a shortened or condensed synchronous orbit was assembled and given its initial tests in vacuum over a temperature range of 0 to 50C. Comparison of results of the initial battery tests with the design computations and pre-assembly tests of the stabistor and heat sink showed an unexpected discrepancy which may be related to the thermal capacity of the heat sink. A trimming adjustment of the heat sink was performed to reduce the diode peak voltage at the end of charge, and the eight month test was initiated. The heat sink used in this system represents a further refinement which calculations show will limit the voltage of each cell individually yet sum the power outputs of the diodes (when the cells reach full charge) as an indication that the battery is substantially charged.
