Development of Fabrication Techniques for Controlling the Thickness per Ply of Graphite Epoxy Composites.

Abstract

Efforts were made to obtain a graphite epoxy composite having a thickness in the range of 2 to 4 mils per ply as compared to a normal or standard composite having a thickness of 7 to 8 mils per ply. Composites were fabricated by passing graphite yarn through an epoxy resin and circumferentially winding about a halocarbon plastic covered mandrel. The thickness per ply was determined by measuring the thickness of the composite for a given number of plies. Graphite epoxy composites with decreased thicknesses per ply were obtained in this program. (Author)
