The Stress Around Reinforced Circular and Square Holes with Rounded Corners in a Plate Subjected to Tensile Load.

Abstract

This report presents an analytical solution for the elastic stresses around a reinforced square hole with rounded corners in a large flat plate subjected to pure tension (or compression). The method of solution is a combination of a conformal mapping technique and the complex variable method of Muskhelishvili extended to include the case of multiple boundaries. The form of the function for mapping the opening was obtained previously by the author in a study of unreinforced openings. Both the radius of curvature of the corners and the amount of the reinforcing material are varied systematically over a range of interest for design applications. The results are given in terms of stress concentrations around the boundary of the opening and a comparison is made with some existing experimental results. (Author)
