Three-Channel Radiosonde for AN/AMQ-25() Atmospheric Meteorological Probe.

Abstract

A new three-channel radiosonde is being developed for use in the AN/AMQ-23() atmospheric meteorological probe. Carried to an altitude of 100,000 feet by a free balloon and lowered to the earth by a parachute, the radiosonde's sensors collect temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure data. Each sensor has its own blocking oscillator and pulsed subcarrier that operate on different frequencies: 18 kHz for the temperature thermistor, 29 kHz for the humidity carbon filament element, and 46 kHz for the atmospheric pressure aneroid sensor. These data are transmitted simultaneously to an AN/TMQ-19() automatic atmospheric sounding set on the ground. Radiosondes currently in use are of the sequential type. Because the radiosonde is in motion while the sensors are sequentially scanned, there is some discontinuity between temperature, humidity, and pressure data. Simultaneous transmission of these data will reduce this discontinuity. (Author)
