Radiation Effects in Dielectric Materials.

Abstract

Temperature dependence measurements of polarization on sapphire show polarization fields that are approximately equal to the applied field at 200K and that decrease to approximately zero at 700K. Delayed conductivity components, which are extremely small at low temperatures, contribute about equally to charge transfer at 600 to 700K. An aging effect has been observed in Ag-painted contacts on sapphire. A sample with freshly prepared contacts exhibits little or no polarization, but after 5 months the same degree of polarization is observed as in samples with standard aluminum contacts evaporated on ion-cleaned surfaces. A sample of a Czochralski-grown sapphire demonstrated a superlinear dependence of induced conductivity on dose rate in one radiation test. (Author)
