Positioning the Gulf Stream with Airborne Radiation Thermometer Data.
Abstract
Systematic surveys with an infrared thermometer from an altitude of 300 meters are providing near-synoptic sea surface temperature data for the Gulf Stream area. Analyses of the data clearly reveal the strong surface thermal gradients of the northern boundary and make possible a determination of the monthly positions of the Gulf Stream boundary. Surveys made between September 1966 and January 1967 from Cape Hatteras to 60 degrees W show two meanders which propagated eastward at speeds of 3 to 10 cm/sec with a predominant wavelength of approximately 300 to 500 kilometers.
