Design and Evaluation of a Rain Insensitive Modification to the M557E1 Point Detonating Fuze.

Abstract

Under a Product Improvement Program, the firing pin of the M557 Point Detonating (PD) Fuze was recessed and cross bars and drain holes added to eliminate the possibility of initiating the PD element due to impacts with rain drops and foliage. The most tested configuration of the firing pin recess consisted of 3/4-inch deep by 1/2-inch diameter cavity with three cross bars assembled at various depths and four drain holes at the bottom of the cavity. A number of design variations were tried using shallower recesses, eliminating drain holes and deleting the means of baffling the recess, which demonstrated that 1/2-inch deep recess with three cross bars gives the most effective means of rain desensitization. The sensitivity of the modified fuze to rain drop impacts was tested in a simulated rain field, using a rocket driven sled and artillery fire. (Author)
