Research in Russian-English Machine Translation on Syntactic Level. Volume I.

Abstract

The report describes results of research in descriptive linguistics, systems design and theoretical linguistics, directed toward development of a system for machine translation of Russian scientific and technical texts into English. Syntactic level research in descriptive linguistics concentrated on phrasal structures, with particular emphasis on verb phrases and, to a lesser extent, clause problems in the area of adverbials. Programming effort included continuation of re-programming from IBM 7090 to CDC 6600-1700 (with emphasis on heuristics for optimization of computer processing time), and design of a large capacity data maintenance system (Remote File Maintenance System) for corpus and grammar. Theoretical linguistics was mainly concerned with design of analysis and translation algorithm for greater economy and efficiency in linguistic description and language data processing. (Author)
