Experimental Very Low Frequency Navigation System Evaluation.

Abstract

The report summarizes the results of the FY65 operational analysis of the Tracor Experimental Very Low Frequency (VLF) Navigation System. This low-cost relative-ranging system utilizes existing VLF transmitters, provides worldwide navigational coverage, and is available now for operational use. Positional differences were derived by fix comparisons between VLF and systems such as Loran-A and Decca. The mean difference of all evaluation data was found to be as low as plus or minus 2.5 nautical miles. Until additional data is obtained, the final accuracy figures for the VLF System cannot be stated. Studies now underway do indicate that with proper operating procedures, equipment modification, and transmitter cooperation, attainable repeatabilities should be within a one sigma range of plus or minus 1.8 nautical miles.
