Munition and Cluster Weapon Optimization Techniques.

Abstract

This investigation established the techniques to evaluate unitary and cluster weapons and developed a computer program capable of optimizing warhead design parameters and terminal delivery conditions of munitions and cluster fragmentation/blast weapon systems when deployed against surface target complexes. The program incorporates the following: (1) the Method of Steepest Ascent optimization procedure to determine optimal parameter values and a parametric mode for parameter sensitivity investigations; (2) high efficiency which enables the kill probability of a weapon to be optimized with minimum computer time; (3) state of the art technology employed in the unitary and cluster weapon evaluation modes; (4) mathematical definition of warhead and target amenable to use of existing data; and (5) program in modular form permitting modification for development of future weapon optimization computer programs with minimal effort. The lethal area weapon optimization computer program was modified to increase flexibility and user convenience. (Author)
