Service Test of Tank, Combat, Full-Tracked, 152mm Gun, M60A1E2 with Closed Breech Scavenger System and Laser Range Finder.

Abstract

Test objectives were to determine the suitability of the M60A1E2 tank as a weapon system and to evaluate the Closed Breech Scavenger System and the Laser Rangefinder mounted in the M60A1E2 tank. Testing was conducted under simulated tactical conditions with an M60A1E2 production model tank with complete Closed Breech Scavenger System. No testing was conducted on the Laser Rangefinder because a safety release was not received. During the test period, active testing was conducted 9 days of the 54 days available for test. Excessive downtime for the most part was due to equipment faults, found in the preoperational phase of the test. Of the 25 subtests planned, only the preoperational inspection and stowage subtests were completed. Results are based on vehicle operation of 266.4 miles and firing 167 rounds of conventional 152MM ammunition with the main gun, and 1,110 .50 caliber rounds with the M85 cupola-mounted machine gun. Nine deficiencies were revealed during testing of which eight pertained to reliability and one to test equipment. Throughout testing the Closed Breech Scavenger System functioned satisfactorily.
