Sound Field Computation by Means of Desk Top Computers

Abstract

Several formulae concerning sound in sea water are presented in forms that are convenient to program on a desk-top computer (DTC). They are: (1) Formula for calculating sound speed in sea water; (2) Ray tracing formulae for calculating the sound ray path in a medium with the sound speed varying only as a function of depth; (3) Intensity formulae for calculating the intensity along a ray already plotted; (4) Travel-time formulae for calculating the travel-time for a ray already plotted; (5) Pressure-depth formula. Special applications to one existing DTC (the Olivetti 101) are given, with the programs given in tables. Two examples to illustrate the program's usefulness are given at the end.
