Lecture Series in Differential Equations Session 5. Differential Equations of Mathematical Physics,

Abstract

The Fifth Session, on Differential Equations of Mathematical Physics, included lectrues by Professors A. S. Wightman and K. O. Friedrichs. Professor Wightman discussed the present state of knowledge of the solutions of partial differential equations in relativistic quantum field theory. He emphasized features which were characteristically different from those appearing in the classical solutions of partial differential equations. The theory and state of the art of solutions for both linear and non-linear partial differential equations in quantum field theory are included in this report. Professor Friedrichs discussed differential equation problems of classical mathematical physics. This report includes a general description of the symmetry and positivity properties of differential equations and a discussion of whether or not they are satisfied for equations of mathematical physics, and indicates how certain derived equations for which they are not satisfied may be handled.
