Lecture Series in Differential Equations. Session 8. Numerical Solutions.

Abstract

The Eighth Session, on Numerical Solutions, included lectures by G. Brikhoff, P. J. Davis and P. D. Lax. Professor Birkhoff's lecture was entitled 'Numerical Solution of Elliptic Equations.' He discussed various examples of how typical elliptic boundary value problems are approached for numerical solution and indicated new approaches using Hermitian and spline interpolation. Professor Davis discussed approximate integration rules with non-negative weights. He considered rules of approximate integration of the form the integral over S of f du = Summation from i=1 to i=N of (w sub i) f (P sub i), where the points P sub i are the abscissas of the rule and the constants W sub i are the weights. Professor Lax discussed toeplitz operators and gave a simplified derivation of basic results of the theory of matrix Wiener-Hopf (Toeplitz) operators along with an important application. (Author)
