Exploratory Tests of Alumina Spheres Under External Pressure,

Abstract

Twenty nine, 10-in. -diameter monolithic alumina spherical shell models were collapsed under hydrostatic pressure to explore the potential of alumina as a material for deep-submergence structural floats. The results were encouraging in that stress levels in excess of 500,000 psi were achieved in a number of tests. (Author)
