Transient Behavior of Microwave Networks.

Abstract

New quantitative relationships between risetime, settling time, Q, and bandwidth are presented. These relationships have particular utility when the system function of the network can be found in closed form. In the next section useful bounds on the risetime and settling time of the network are presented when an investigator has only experimental data available to make a judgment. Section IV describes an improved method for extracting from noise wideband signals displayed on a sampling oscilloscope. This method compensates for both long term amplitude drift and time shifting errors. The next section describes the analysis and development of a hi-fi cryogenic delay line used for triggering the sampling oscilloscope when no pre-trigger is available. The line described here produces a time delay of 77 nsec while introducing no discernible distortion for an input step having a risetime of 30 psec. In Sec. VI the necessary and sufficient conditions required for a microwave system to have a time limited impulse response (TLIR) are presented. In the last section a theoretical and experimental analysis of the transient behavior of a ferrite circulator having essentially a TLIR is described. A network model utilizing gyrators is offered which is in qualitative agreement with results obtained using short pulses or CW generators. (Author)
