Effects of Electrostatic Fields on Heat Transfer Under Forced Convection Conditions.
Abstract
This study was an experimental investigation of the effects of electrostatic fields on heat transfer under free and forced convection conditions in air where the electrostatic fields were produced by parallel wires of alternate high voltage and ground potential spaced 1 in apart and placed symmetrically and vertically on the surface of the test plate. Test runs were carried out at free stream velocities of zero, 6.35, 10.0, 15.0, 17.3, and 30.8 ft/sec. Experimental results showed that the convective heat transfer increased 68.8% due to an electrostatic field (7.0 KV) under free convection conditions. As the free stream velocity was increased, the convective heat transfer increase correspondingly decreased so that at a free stream velocity of 30.8 ft/sec there was no measurable increase in heat transfer rate with an applied electrostatic field.
